About The Huck Report

Hi, my name is Huck and I am a full-blooded Border Collie.  I was born in May 2006, the only male in a litter of four siblings.  When I wasn't good at herding cattle, my owner gave me up for adoption, surrendering me to a Border Collie Rescue group.  My sister Jett and I were very lucky to end up this way; many border collies are abandoned or taken to shelters.  Since borders are so smart Embarassed many people think they want a border collie and so puppy breeders often try to make money by breeding and selling border collies.  Frown

But we borders are active dogs, and aren't well suited to a sedentary life.  The border collie rescue groups try to educate people about us, and try to find us good forever homes.  My foster dad's name is Al and he was great.  He showed me how not to "go" inside the house, how to walk on a leash, and what to do when someone says "easy" or "stop" or "sit" and stuff like that.

I was sad to leave Daddy Al, but I was lucky to find my family.  I have a dad and mom and two great boys aged 11 and 8 who love to run around the backyard with me and let me herd them.  We go for walks in the park and hikes in the woods.  I have a fenced backyard where I can go out to play nearly every single day.

So my new mom said I should start this blog to tell about my adventures with my family, and that maybe others could learn from my story.

Vol. 1, No 2.
Dear Daddy Al,
It has been a long time since I wrote and I'm real sorry.  We've been pretty busy here, but now that the boys have gone back to school I have more time to write you.

I can't remember if I told you I went to the vet with a cold but I got better really fast with the medicine and I have LOTS more energy.  I play every day with the dog next door on the other side of the fence but I also go for walks on the leash in the new subdivision across the street.  I REALLY like it across the street because there are SO MANY neat smells over there.  Sometimes we go to the park and walk on the greenway or on the trail over the ridge.  That is super fun.

Daddy Chuck says that I am doing really good listening to him and he is really proud of me.  I was pretty scared one night when the family got home and he found me in the sunroom playing in the cat box.  Well - the cats kept going in there and it looked interesting and so I jumped the gate but then I couldn't get back out!  And there was water spilled on the floor and the sandbox looked really fun.  Well, anyway, I was a little scared when I saw his face but he just put me out in the backyard and then a little while later came and got me and took me to the bathroom and gave me a bath.  I don't really like baths, but they're not really awful, I guess.  They just won't let me go out for a while afterwards.  I don't know why; I'd like to find something to roll in to make me smell better instead of shampoo.  But they do pet me a lot and tell me I'm a good dog after a bath, so that's not so bad.

The cat got out one day and I just wanted to play with him, but he wouldn't play and kept running away.  They said I herded him back in the house.  I never saw people laugh so hard.  I just wanted the cat to come back out so we could do that again, but he wouldn't.  In fact, I didn't see him for a long time after that.  Mama Tracy said she never was so entertained and that I was such a good boy for herding the cat back inside where he belongs.

Well the sun is shining and my little beagle girl friend next door wants to play, so I better go.  So much to do, so little time.  I hope you and Mom and all the other dogs are well.   We hope to come see you one weekend soon.
